THE VALIANT #1: OUT DECEMBER 10!
A battle ten millennia in the making...
Valiant Entertainment is proud to present the first look inside THE VALIANT #1 – the FIRST ISSUE of a new prestige format four-issue limited series beginning in December from New York Times best-selling writers Jeff Lemire (Green Arrow, Animal Man) and Matt Kindt (RAI, UNITY, Mind MGMT), and Eisner Award-winning artist Paolo Rivera (Daredevil)!
An entirely self-contained, new reader friendly comics event spotlighting Bloodshot, Eternal Warrior, Geomancer, and a cast of heroes and villains from across the Valiant Universe, THE VALIANT is a visionary new adventure from three of the greatest creative talents in comics today.
The Eternal Warrior has protected the Earth for more than 10,000 years. A master of countless weapons and long forgotten martial arts, he is guided by the Geomancers – those who speak for the Earth. During his long watch, the Eternal Warrior has failed three times. Each time, the Geomancer was killed…and a new dark age for humanity began. Each time, he was unable to stop The Immortal Enemy – a monstrous force of nature. A civilization killer. A horror that appears differently each time it arrives…and whose seemingly only purpose is to bring disorder and darkness to the world. Now, the time has come for The Immortal Enemy to return once more. But, this time, the Eternal Warrior will be ready. This time, he has a force greater than any single warrior. This time, he has…THE VALIANT.

IN MEMORY OF ROB CHARPENTIER
This past week Rob Charpentier, the owner of my local comic book store in Toronto's east end, passed away after a battle with cancer. Rob will be missed by all the loyal patrons and friends at his shop Comics And More at Greenwood and Danforth.
When I first moved from the west end to the east end about seven years ago, I felt pretty displaced and Rob and his store were my anchor. It was great to not only have a comic shop in my new neighbourhood, but to have a really good comic shop with an owner who was willing to take chances on the work of newcomers. At the time I had very little published material under my belt, but Rob was always a very great supporter, making sure to order all off my books and promote them in the store.
Over the years, I got to know Rob better, visiting at least twice a week. Rob was always the first to what new DC projects I'd be doing, based on the stacks of "reference material" I'd come in and buy.
I was saddened to learn about Rob's illness a couple months back. He was unable to work at the store anymore, but continued reading. One of his fears near the end was not getting a chance to see the end of Grant Morrison's long anticipated Multiversity project. (It should be noted that when I reached out to DC Comics about this they helped connect Grant with Rob. Grant spent nearly an hour talking to Rob on the phone in his hospital room. DC and Grant's kindness was not lost on Rob or his friends at the store, and was a real bright spot for Rob near the end).
Rob was a great guy, always full of opinions on the state of comics, but also always willing to support new ideas and new voices in the medium. His death leaves a big hole in our neighbourhood. Rob will be truly missed.

LEMIRE & PEREZ RELAUNCH HAWKEYE IN 2015
With Matt Fraction and David Aja closing out their epic run on "Hawkeye" -- arguably one of the most critically acclaimed comic book series of the past decade -- Marvel Comics realized it would need a top shelf creative team to commit to the title if it was going to continue its high quality and craftsmanship.
The House of Ideas just hit a bullseye.
During the Axel-In Charge panel at New York Comic Con, Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso announced that Eisner Award-nominated writer Jeff Lemire ("Sweet Tooth," "Essex County") and Eisner Award-winning artistRamón Pérez ("Jim Henson's Tale of Sand") would be teaming up on "Hawkeye" beginning in Spring 2015, thereby securing a dream team worthy of the series, which has generated multiple awards including being named an Official Selection for Festival d'Angoulême 2014.
This project marks Lemire's Marvel debut, with the superstar writer recently finished an exclusive deal with DC Comics and branching out with new projects at Image Comics, Dark Horse and Valiant. Once Alsonso and series editor Sana Amanat knew Lemire was open to creating comics for Marvel, Alonso reached out to the cartoonist personally to offer him "Hawkeye." Pérez has been illustrating series for Marvel for a few years, including bestselling titles like "Amazing Spider-Man" and "Wolverine & The X-Men."
In this exclusive first interview about the upcoming series, which will launch with a new "Hawkeye" #1 in March 2015, Lemire, Pérez and Amanat discussed the secret origin of the top secret project, how it was nearly named "Hawkeyes" to reflect the importance of Clint Barton's protégé Kate Bishop, and why the brand of storytelling will be reminiscent of Lemire's work on indie hits like "Essex County" and "The Underwater Welder."

Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen Bring DESCENDER to IMAGE COMICS in 2015
Jeff Lemire (Sweet Tooth, Trillium,
Animal Man) and Dustin Nguyen (Batman, Little Gotham, American
Vampire) team up to bring a brand new monthly science fiction series to
Image Comics in March 2015 about one young robot’s struggle to stay alive in a
universe where all androids have been outlawed and bounty hunters lurk on every
planet.
Ten years ago massive, planet-sized robots
called “The Harvesters” materialized without warning and invaded the orbits of
all the United Galactic Council’s worlds wiping out entire planets and
civilizations before disappearing again. In a fear-fueled response to this machine
holocaust, the galaxy blamed millions of robotic companions, whom they
suspected of somehow spawning The Harvesters. All robots and androids were
immediately outlawed and ruthless bounty hunters called Scrappers were charged
with scouring the universe for any surviving robots.
The incredibly life-like artificial boy, TIM-21
may hold the secrets to the origin of The Harvesters deep in his machine
DNA—and as a result is the most-wanted robot in the universe. With only
his small pet-bot, Bandit and the lumbering mining droid, Driller at his side,
TIM-21 goes on the run. Before long the entire galaxy is looking for this
rag-tag group of unlikely companions, as they make their way from one exotic
planet to the next with new foes advancing on them at every turn.
“I’m incredibly excited to bring DESCENDER to
IMAGE COMICS with Dustin Nguyen. Descender is a huge sprawling sci-fi epic,
full of mystery and adventure, but at its heart it’s also the story of a little
boy looking for a home in a universe that hates and fears him.”
A rip-roaring and heart-felt cosmic odyssey, DESCENDER
will pit humanity against machine, and world against world, to create a
sprawling space opera from Image Comics this March 2015.

LEMIRE, KINDT and RIVERA "THE VALIANT" THIS DECEMBER
As announced at Comic Book Resources, Jeff Lemire is coming to Valiant for his first written work, co-written with Matt Kindt and illustrated by Paolo Rivera. Entitled “The Valiant,” the book is a four-issue prestige style series that brings together the Eternal Warrior, Bloodshot and the new Geomancer Kay McHenry as they go up against a universe-threatening villain named The Immortal Enemy. Fans of the Eternal Warrior will no doubt remember the Immortal Enemy, a villain who could reincarnate throughout different ages always with the same nefarious plans of domination and destruction, though there was always someone there to defeat him — and that’s where Lemire comes in.
The book will span most the entirety of the Valiant Universe and its history as it stands today, back to the “dawn of the universe, to the very seeds of it centuries ago all the way up to the modern day.” It sounds like a primer of the Valiant Universe mixed in with an epic battle of good and evil, and while it mainly features Bloodshot, Geomancer and the Eternal Warrior, fans should expect many of Valiant’s characters to appear (such as Armstrong, who is on the cover above). Lemire also notes that this will also tie into what Kindt is doing with “Unity,” as the Eternal Warrior is a part of that team so you can expect to see them pop up.
It’s noted that while this is somewhat of an event, it’s not an event in the traditional modern terms — there will be no tie-ins, no ancillary issues, and everything is contained to the four issue series. Lemire also promises that this will be a big status quo challenger in the way that all company-wide events offer shake-ups. However, given the smaller stature and more controlled publishing line at Valiant, you could expect those words to hold a bit more gravitas than your average event-given platitudes.
“The Valiant” begins in December.

BLACK HAMMER: New Ongoing Series from Jeff Lemire and Dean Ormston and Dark Horse Comics!
BLACK HAMMER will be a brand new creator-owned ongoing series from Dark Horse Comics coming late 2014. The book is written by Jeff Lemire (Sweet Tooth, Trillium, Animal Man) and drawn by the amazing Dean Ormston (Books of Magik).
BLACK HAMMER follows a group of oddball superheroes who have been "wiped out of continuity" after an earth shaking cataclysmic "event" and wake on a farm in a mysterious small town.
They were the greatest heroes of a lost era, Golden Aged crime buster, ABRAHAM SLAM, interstellar adventurer COL. WEIRD and his robot sidekick TALKY-WALKY, BARBALIEN warlord From Mars, GOLDEN GAIL, America’s super-sweetheart, MADAME DRAGONFLY, mistress of the macabre, and BLACK HAMMER invincible champion of the streets.
They have no idea where they are or how to get back home. All they know is they can't leave the borders of the seemingly idyllic small town.
The book follows the strange cast of characters as they work to assimilate themselves into quiet small town life, living as a bizarre surrogate family on the farm, all the while try to uncover the many mysteries of the farm, where they really are and how to get back home.
BLACK HAMMER will be a monthly ongoing series launching in MARCH 2015 from Dark Horse Comics!

JUSTICE LEAGUE CANADA becomes JUSTICE LEAGUE UNITED A New Ongoing Series in April!
Last Summer, DC Comics and I announced that I would be taking over as the writer of the comic book series Justice League of America, along with artist Mike McKone, and changing the title to Justice League Canada in 2014.
Since then I have been working steadily on the book, and my plans for the series continued to expand and grow and DC and I mutually agreed that the Canada title was too limiting for the cosmic scope the series was taking. As a result, JLA will be ending in April and my book will become a brand new ongoing series called JUSTICE LEAGUE UNITED!
Justice League United will launch in April with an extra-sized Zero Issue followed by #1 in May.
And the first storyline will be titled: Justice League Canada.
The team will still be based in Canada and the book will still introduce a brand new First Nations Canadian superhero to the DC Universe. More details on this new character, her origin and her powers, will be released in the weeks to come.
The roster of the new Justice League team will be a collection of some of my favourite DC characters: ANIMAL MAN, GREEN ARROW, STARGIRL, MARTIAN MANHUNTER, ADAM STRANGE, SUPERGIRL, ALANNA STRANGE and HAWKMAN. The JLU's headquarters will be set in Moosonee, Ontario and their missions will juxtapose adventures firmly set in rural Canada with more cosmic, planet-hopping high adventure around the galaxy.
More details about the new series can be found in a recent interview I did with USA Today...
