Thought On Comicsgate. Time To Speak Up.
A couple of days ago I tweeted about Comicsgate. This seems to have made a lot of people angry. Well, that’s too bad, but I fully stand by what I said. For too long, too many creators and members of the comics industry, who are not straight white men, have been harassed, abused and attacked online, when all they want to do is tell stories and make comics. This is not right.
If you don’t like the stories these creators are telling, then don’t buy them. That is your right. What is not your right is to attack them and try to silence their voices.
I had hoped more creators who, like me, have had the privilege to create comics free of this sort of abuse and scrutiny, because we are white, and we are men, would have joined me in denouncing Comicsgate. I know many of you feel the way I do. I noticed that many popular and significant creators “liked” my tweet. And that’s great, but it’s not enough. If we can’t use our voices to stand up for the next generation of comics creators, editors and the next wave of voices that will keep our medium alive and vital, then what’s the point of having them?
The time is now to stand up for female comic book creators. The time is now to stand up for trans comic book creators. The time is now to stand up for creators of color and of all sexual orientations, races and religions. If we don’t do that, we don’t deserve to keep making comics ourselves.
So, don’t just like tweets. Say something. Let marginalized creators and voices know that we are with them. Comics are for everybody. Let the world know that.

MORE BLACK HAMMER AND OTHER THINGS!
As 2017 winds down I'm looking ahead to an exciting 2018 with lots of new projects on the horizon...
While ROYAL CITY and DESCENDER will continue I also have a new series, GIDEON FALLS, coming in MARCH with artist ANDREA SORRENTINO and DAVE STEWART. Andrea and I worked together on Green Arrow and Old Man Logan for Marvel and DC, bit this is our first creator owned book. Its a supernatural horror series, a rural mystery. More details to come soon.

The world of BLACK HAMMER will also grow in 2018 with the launch of the just announced mini-series, DOCTOR STAR & THE KINGDOM OF LOST TOMORROWS with artist Max Fiumara and Dave Stewart. The main Black Hammer story also continues in April with Dean Ormston when we relaunch the core series as BLACK HAMMER: AGE OF DOOM (details on that below).
And I'll be doing a new book for DC COMICS in February, THE TERRIFICS with artists Iva Reis and Doc Shaner. The series combines a bunch of my favourite DC characters, METAMORPHO, PLASTIC MAN, MR. TERRIFIC and PHANTOM GIRL in a fun book full of adventure and heart.
And, in addition I will be doing another new series for DC called THE INFERIOR FIVE with one of my heroes KEITH GIFFEN! Keith will be drawing the book and I'll be scripting it, and also drawing 5-page backups featuring THE PEACEMAKER. The book will be set in the DC Universe of 1988!

For Gord.
I met Gord Downie about four years ago. He and his brother, Mike treated me to coffee near my studio in Leslieville and they told me about Chanie Wenjack.
I had never heard of Chanie Wenjack. Chances are neither had you. I was immediately moved by Gord's warmth, passion and humour. We started working together immediately.
He would visit every couple weeks and I would show him my drawings. We would laugh and talk and somewhere in there, there was even a 400km snowmobile ride in arctic temperatures, a hockey game in a hotel room in Timmins, and because of him I finally got to fulfill my teenaged dream of joining a rock band, even though I can't play any instruments.
He had a way about him that made it feel like we'd known each other for years. I miss him now and I will always miss him.
We became friends. More than friends...we created something together. And art never dies.
I love you, Gord. You changed my life and made me a better man and a better artist. I will see you again...

ANNOUNCING: BLACK HAMMER: AGE OF DOOM!!
Dark Horse Comics has announced that writer Jeff Lemire and artist Dean Ormston’s creator owned Black Hammersuperhero saga will return in 2018 with a new ongoing series titled Black Hammer: Age of Doom. The new ongoing series will continue to chronicle the adventures of the forgotten champions of Spiral City, following the events of the cliffhanger ending of issue thirteen of Black Hammer.
“One thing Black Hammer has always done is comment on the history of superhero comics and we live in a world where superhero universes seem to be rebooted, relaunched, and rebirthed every year,” said Lemire. “It felt like we needed to play around with that idea, but put a Black Hammer spin on it. So, starting in April, Dean, Dave Stewart, Todd Klein, and I will continue the story and the mystery of Black Hammer farm in Black Hammer: Age of Doom! It’s a new series, but everything you love will stay intact and we’ll deliver the next chapter in the story of Golden Gail, Abraham Slam, Barbalien and the rest of the gang.”
“Black Hammer ends with a major, game changing revelation,” said Ormston. “Readers are super keen to find out how our heroes are stuck on the farm and more answers, twists and turns are coming in Black Hammer: Age of Doom.”
Meanwhile fans won’t have to wait long for new Black Hammer universe stories. On October 18, Dark Horse Comics will publish the first issue of Sherlock Frankenstein & The Legion of Evil, written by Lemire and illustrated by artist David RubÃn (Ether). The highly anticipated four issue series follows Lucy Weber—the daughter of the Black Hammer and an investigative reporter for the Global Planet—as she uncovers the dark secret origins of some of her father’s greatest foes. Sherlock Frankenstein & The Legion of Evil is the first of several high profile Black Hammer mini-series, all of which will feature different artists.
When Black Hammer: Age of Doom debuts in April 2018, each issue of the ongoing series will featuring a variant cover by an acclaimed artist, including an issue 1 cover by Skottie Young (I Hate Fairyland) and an issue 2 variant cover by Fábio Moon (Two Brothers) that is an homage to Frank Miller’s icon Batman: The Dark Knight Returns cover.
“Black Hammer has grown beyond what Dean Ormston and I could ever have hoped for,” said Lemire. “We’ve fallen in love with the world of Black Hammer and the characters that live there and we have a lot of story left to tell. This ending is just the beginning.”
Praise for Black Hammer:
“Every so often, you read a comic that grabs hold of you and won’t let go. Its world is fascinating, its characters are captivating and its art is mesmerizing.” — IGN
“I didn’t think something could be thrilling and sad at the same time but now there’s Black Hammer proving me wrong. Amazing, just flat-out amazing.”—Patton Oswalt
“A cosmic, reality-bending battle.”— THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER
“I don’t read many comics these days and I can’t remember the last time I read a superhero comic, but I’m loving Black Hammer by Jeff Lemire, Dean Ormston, and Dave Stewart.”—Mike Mignola (Hellboy)
“Sad, dark, and brilliant… Ormston is a storytelling godsend, a master of pacing and delivery.”—THE NERDIST
“At once an epic, gripping superhero mystery, and a heartfelt meditation on why superheroes matter, Black Hammer is easily one of Lemire’s best creations. Peopled with fantastic characters like the haunting Colonel Weird and the mysterious Madame Dragonfly—each made wondrously vibrant by Ormston’s pen—Black Hammeris place you too will find nearly impossible to leave.” —Scott Snyder (Wytches)
“Masterfully plays with all the many tropes and genres of superhero fiction over the past few decades.” — ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY
“Jeff Lemire’s Black Hammer feels like it’s walking two roads—one honoring the past of superhero comics, and one forging a path into the future of the genre.”—Cullen Bunn (Harrow County)
“Evocative.” — LA REVIEW OF BOOKS
“On my pull list by the time I got to page five.” — Mark Waid (Kingdom Come)
“Fascinating.” — AM NEW YORK
“Black Hammer is the maddest, most brilliant comic I’ve read in years.”—Mark Millar (Kick Ass)
“As much a study of loneliness and isolation as it is a superhero deconstruction. If Black Hammer lives up to its early promise, it will deserve a place on the shelf right next to the Watchmen series.” — PUBLISHERS WEEKLY (Starred Review)
