Where does a young boy turn when his whole world suddenly disappears? What could change two brothers from an unstoppable team into a pair of bitterly estranged loners? How does the work of one middle-aged nurse reveal the scars of an entire community, and can anything heal the wounds caused by a century of deception?

Critically-acclaimed cartoonist Jeff Lemire pays tribute to his roots with Essex County, an award-winning trilogy of graphic novels set in an imaginary version of the Ontario county where he was born. In Essex County, Lemire crafts an intimate study of one community through the years, and a tender meditation on family, memory, grief, secrets, and reconciliation. With the lush, expressive inking of a young artist at the height of his powers, Lemire draws us in and sets us free.

This new edition collects the complete Essex County trilogy (Tales from the Farm, Ghost Stories, and The Country Nurse) in one deluxe volume! Also included are over 50 pages of previously unpublished material, including sketches, promotional art, and two new stories. -- A Softcover Graphic Novel with French Flaps, 512 pages, 6 1/2" x 9", Young Adult (13+), Diamond: JUN091069, ISBN 978-1-60309-038-4, $29.95

TCAF Roundup

I had a fantastic weekend at The Toronto Comic Arts Festival, truly the most diverse and talented line-up of cartoonists at any convention in North America.

I especially enjoyed spending the weekend with fellow Top-Shelfer Matt Kindt who stayed at my place. Matt and have so much in common, and get along so well that and I only wish we lived in the same city. We had fun sketching and drawing together. Here are two of the characters from my upcoming Vertigo series Sweet Tooth. The first is pencilled by Matt and inked by me. The second was pencilled by me and inked by Matt. The results are odd, kind of a mishmash of our styles, but they were lot of fun to do. Check out Matt's blog to see me doing his characters and a few of my drawing that he painted over.

VICTORY AT LAST!

Well, my hockey team The Flying Burritos and I have been playing together for five seasons now, and this weekend we finally overcame our collective demons and emerged as the Exclaim Cup Champions at the Exclaim Hockey Summit of The Arts.

It was a HARD fought tourney with five games played over three days, and we had to beat The Montreal Ninja Tunes, The Bi-Town Billionaires and The Dartmouth Ferries to make it to the Championship game vs. The Gas Station Islanders yesterday. Nerves were high as we took the ice in front of a healthy-sized crowd of friends and family, but in the end we beat them handily 3-1 and claimed the trophy.

I had a strong tournament with 3 goals and 2 assists, and the we had a lot of fun, drank a lot of beer and played a lot of good hockey. Way to go Burritos!
