Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen Bring DESCENDER to IMAGE COMICS in 2015

Jeff Lemire (Sweet Tooth, Trillium, Animal Man) and Dustin Nguyen (Batman, Little Gotham, American Vampire) team up to bring a brand new monthly science fiction series to Image Comics in March 2015 about one young robot’s struggle to stay alive in a universe where all androids have been outlawed and bounty hunters lurk on every planet.

Ten years ago massive, planet-sized robots called “The Harvesters” materialized without warning and invaded the orbits of all the United Galactic Council’s worlds wiping out entire planets and civilizations before disappearing again. In a fear-fueled response to this machine holocaust, the galaxy blamed millions of robotic companions, whom they suspected of somehow spawning The Harvesters. All robots and androids were immediately outlawed and ruthless bounty hunters called Scrappers were charged with scouring the universe for any surviving robots.

The incredibly life-like artificial boy, TIM-21 may hold the secrets to the origin of The Harvesters deep in his machine DNA—and as a result is the most-wanted robot in the universe. With only his small pet-bot, Bandit and the lumbering mining droid, Driller at his side, TIM-21 goes on the run. Before long the entire galaxy is looking for this rag-tag group of unlikely companions, as they make their way from one exotic planet to the next with new foes advancing on them at every turn.

“I’m incredibly excited to bring DESCENDER to IMAGE COMICS with Dustin Nguyen. Descender is a huge sprawling sci-fi epic, full of mystery and adventure, but at its heart it’s also the story of a little boy looking for a home in a universe that hates and fears him.”

A rip-roaring and heart-felt cosmic odyssey, DESCENDER will pit humanity against machine, and world against world, to create a sprawling space opera from Image Comics this March 2015.

DAMON LINDELOF SWEET TOOTH FINALE INTERVIEW

LOST  co-creator and STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS / PROMETHEUS screenwriter DAMON LINDELOF has interviewed me about the end of Sweet Tooth over at Comic Book Resources.

Issue 40 also received a 5-star review at CBR, saying...

"I have no doubt readers will set up their back issues to relive the entire tale once more after closing this issue, while those who came late to the story will undoubtedly seek out the entirety. This series has been unique and heralded as such, but "Sweet Tooth" #40 is, quite simply, the best single-issue story in the story of the boy with antlers."

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY has posted a new interview with me regarding the final issue of my Vertigo series SWEET TOOTH which was released yesterday...

Justice League Dark Begins this Wednesday!

My run as the new writer of DC Comics' JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK title begins this Wednesday with Issue #9. Series artist Mikel Janin and I have a huge story planned that ties the "Dark" corners of the New 52 DC Universe to Geoff Johns and Jim Lee's flagship Justice League book.

In addition to a great cast of characters that includes JOHN CONSTANTINE, DEADMAN and ZATANNA, the series will also mark the return and/or reinvention of old fan favourite characters such as BLACK ORCHID as well as a few other surprises.

Issue #9 is a fresh jumping on point for the series, written to be totally accessible to new readers. Jump over to NEWSARAMA for a recent interview on my plans for the series as well as some exclusive new art from #9.

And keep an eye on USA TODAY'S site early next week for a new 5-page preview!

FRANKENSTEIN Stars in final issue MEN OF WAR!

Friday, January 13th, 2012

By Pamela Mullin

At the helm of the final issue of MEN OF WAR are white hot writers Jeff Lemire (Animal Man, Frankenstein Agent of S.H.A.D.E., Sweet Tooth) and Matt Kindt (Revolver) with art by Tom Derenick.

In this action packed issue, Frankenstein walks through a rain of bombs over 1941 London before being dragged to the depths of the Pacific Ocean and onto the shores of Japan. Will he make it there in one piece so he can team up with GI Robot to defeat the Axis weapon that threatens to turn the tide of the war? Frank’s success will hinge on the help of a four-armed super-spy assassin working in the shadows.

(Cover by Victor Kalvachev)

We asked Jeff and Matt about working on this issue and here’s what they had to say:

“I first met Matt Kindt at the MoCCA festival in New York in 2005. He was selling copies of Super Spy and I was selling my first graphic novel, Lost Dogs. We hit it off right away and since then Matt has become one of my closest friends.

Coincidentally, Bob Harras told me I was going to be writing the Frankenstein: Agent of SHADE series, for the New 52, at last year’s Emerald City Con in Seattle. I was sharing a hotel room with Matt that weekend and we spent the rest of the show talking about ideas for the book. Before long it turned into a full-on brainstorming session with Matt and a lot of the ideas from that weekend went into the first 5 or 6 issues of Frank. So Matt has been a secret contributor to the series since it launched in September.

So, when Joey Cavalieri asked me to write this special “Frankenstein in World War II” issue of Men of War, I immediately asked if Matt could co-write it with me. It was an incredibly fun experience. We just kept trying to top each other in terms of the crazy Ideas we could squeeze into the book, and I think fans are going to have as much fun reading it as we had writing it!” – Jeff Lemire

“It was fitting that Jeff and I worked on Frankenstein’s secret World War II history together. We both dug up the craziest ideas we could think of — literally I think we tried to top each other with some outrageous imagery and story ideas. We stitched it all together and then Tom applied the electricity (art) to bring this monster to life. Tom seriously drew what is my favorite double-page spread of all time in this issue. You’ll know it when you see it. I have to say working with Jeff on this has easily been the most fun I’ve had doing comics so far…and I’ve had a lot of fun. And like all unholy unions I think the sum is even crazier than the parts!” – Matt Kindt

This 40-page event full of espionage and monster mayhem is not to be missed!

CBR picks ANIMAL MAN as the #2 Comic of 2011!

Comic Book Resources has announced their top 100 Comics of 2011 and I'm proud to say that Animal Man came in at #2!

2. Animal Man
Written by Jeff Lemire
Drawn by Travel Foreman
Published by DC Comics

"While not as splashy as some of the other big hits unleashed under the New 52 banner, Jeff Lemire and Travel Foreman have given Buddy Baker an epic landscape to operate within -- and considering the character's meta-history, beyond. Destined to crash headfirst into 'Swamp Thing' in the months ahead, Lemire is taking the superhero/horror mash-up he fleshed out in "Superboy" to another level, and that's saying something when you consider 'Superboy' was nominated for an Eisner."

-- CBR Staff Writer Jeffrey Renaud

"Ever since Grant Morrison raised the character from a third- or fourth-tier hero into something unique, there has been a strong desire to see another strong, compelling 'Animal Man' series. This is it. Lemire's take isn't Morrisonian, but it builds the concept of a family-first superhero into something new, and takes Buddy Baker and his young daughter into some very, very dark territory."

-- CBR Staff Writer Shaun Manning

"The mix of lurching dread in Lemire's plot and gorgeously grotesque art by Foreman has surely given its fair share of readers sleepless nights. This is how you take a previously no-list character and bring him up to the big leagues."

-- CBR Contributor Brett White

FRANKENSTEIN and SWEET TOOTH also made it in the Top 100. Thanks to all the great folks at CBR!

Also Out Today SWEET TOOTH #26 with Guest Star MATT KINDT!

And SWEET TOOTH #26 is also out today. It's a great jumping on point to the series, with a brand new storyline starting up called "THE TAXIDERMIST" and features stunning, fully painted artwork by my guest artist extraordinaire, MATT KINDT!

Matt is an incredible cartoonist in his own right. His most recent books include the stunning REVOLVER from Vertigo, 3 STORY:The Secret Life of THE GIANT MAN from Dark Horse and SUPERSPY from Top Shelf. We met at MOCCA about six or seven years ago and hit it off right away. Matt has since become one of my closest friends and agreed to to take on the art chores for this special 3-issue story in Sweet Tooth so that I could finally finish my UNDERWATER WELDER graphic novel for Top Shelf.

The story itself flashes back to 1911 in Alaska and features a whole new cast of characters that, at first glance, seem completely unrelated to out regular cast of Gus, Jepperd etc. But as the tale unfolds we start to see surprising connections and eventually the origin of The Plague will be revealed in Issue 28!

Matt knocked it out of the park, and I think this is some of his absolute finest artwork. I'm really excited about the story and couldn't be happier to finally collaborate with Matt!

I'll leave you with a crazy teaser page from Issue 27!

Animal Man has the sensational Jeff Lemire at the helm.” – Entertainment Weekly

“I don’t want to overhype it, but if you don’t love it from the very first page, you’re not human.” – MTV Geek
