DAMON LINDELOF SWEET TOOTH FINALE INTERVIEW

LOST  co-creator and STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS / PROMETHEUS screenwriter DAMON LINDELOF has interviewed me about the end of Sweet Tooth over at Comic Book Resources.

Issue 40 also received a 5-star review at CBR, saying...

"I have no doubt readers will set up their back issues to relive the entire tale once more after closing this issue, while those who came late to the story will undoubtedly seek out the entirety. This series has been unique and heralded as such, but "Sweet Tooth" #40 is, quite simply, the best single-issue story in the story of the boy with antlers."

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY has posted a new interview with me regarding the final issue of my Vertigo series SWEET TOOTH which was released yesterday...

Justice League Dark Begins this Wednesday!

My run as the new writer of DC Comics' JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK title begins this Wednesday with Issue #9. Series artist Mikel Janin and I have a huge story planned that ties the "Dark" corners of the New 52 DC Universe to Geoff Johns and Jim Lee's flagship Justice League book.

In addition to a great cast of characters that includes JOHN CONSTANTINE, DEADMAN and ZATANNA, the series will also mark the return and/or reinvention of old fan favourite characters such as BLACK ORCHID as well as a few other surprises.

Issue #9 is a fresh jumping on point for the series, written to be totally accessible to new readers. Jump over to NEWSARAMA for a recent interview on my plans for the series as well as some exclusive new art from #9.

And keep an eye on USA TODAY'S site early next week for a new 5-page preview!

BATMAN by Damon Lindelof and Jeff Lemire!

As announced in USA TODAY, I have drawn a new Batman story written by Damon Lindelof , the co-creator of LOST and the screenwriter behind Star Trek and Prometheus!

"While comic-books fans usually live for Wednesdays, when new issues of their favorite books arrive in their local shops, DC Comics aims to make every day a new comics day. And on Thursdays beginning in June, a new digitalBatman series will showcase stories of the Dark Knight outside of regular DC Comics continuity and feature artists and writers such as Ben Templesmith, Steve Niles, B. Clay Moore, Nicola Scott and Joshua Hale Fialkov. One all-star issue teams writer — and Lost co-creator —Damon Lindelof with artist Jeff Lemire (Animal Man, Sweet Tooth)." -USA TODAY

As announced today by WIRED MAGAZINE, DC Comics will be launching NATIONAL COMICS this July. The series will include a series of extra-sized one-shots spotlighting new takes on obscure or little known characters. So make sure to let your local comic shop know to reserve you a copy of this special 48-page story, described below!

NATIONAL COMICS #1: KID ETERNITY, written by Jeff Lemire with art by Cully Hamner will center around Eternity. This is the story of police coroner Christopher Freeman. After being given a second chance on life, he finds himself with the ability to resurrect the dead. Freeman uses his new ability to help those he resurrects to find their murderers and to gain closure, so they can continue to the other side.

JEFF LEMIRE TO DRAW JONAH HEX!

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011

By Austin Trunick

Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray have had a great roster of artists to work with on their Jonah Hex run, and issue #69 will continue that trend when Jeff Lemire takes on art duties for the western series.

Between writing and drawing Vertigo’s SWEET TOOTH and working on scripts for SUPERBOY and FLASHPOINT: FRANKENSTEIN AND THE CREATURES OF THE UNKNOWN, Jeff’s got a ton of great work coming down the pipeline. (Did I mention an appearance in next month’s STRANGE ADVENTURES from Vertigo?)

JONAH HEX #69 hits comic shops in July.

New Sweet Tooth Art, Superboy Reviewed and more!

A nice review of Superboy 2 over at Newsarama:

Superboy #2 (Published by DC Comics; Review by Teresa Jusino): I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: superhero titles that prominently feature teenagers are superhero titles at their best. The issues of identity and responsibility that come up in superhero comics are perfect metaphors for fumbling one’s way to adulthood. In the second issue of this wonderful new series, Superboy is forced to team up with Poison Ivy to solve the mysterious problem of overgrown plant life devouring Smallville. What makes this issue work is writer Jeff Lemire’s focus on Connor Kent’s relationship with his best friend, Simon, who has been begging Connor to allow him to be of help. When Simon rushes in to save the day by use of “Parasite frogs! Patent pending”, you know that these two boys are an excellent team. Lemire imbues this title with loads of humor, which is a change from his more serious-minded Sweet Tooth, and it’s interesting to watch Connor struggle with his new responsibilities and with wondering whether he should take his friend along for the ride, possibly endangering him. However, it’s clear that Simon’s intelligence is not to be underestimated, and I look forward to watching him and Superboy work together to fix an ailing Smallville.

And also, the first ever North American interview with Superboy artist Pier Gallo over at CBR!

And a brand new SWEET TOOTH interview at CBR as well.

And...A new Sweet Tooth blog with never before seen cover sketches over at GRAPHIC CONTENT.

And finally congrats to Lisa McCarty who won the new SWEET TOOTH drawing, featured above, off of my Twitter feed this morning!

FROM ESSEX COUNTY TO SMALLVILLE PART 2.

superboycvr3

So here I am. Superboy #1 is out today! It feels like a long time coming. Pier Gallo and I have already been working on the book for the better part of 2010. So let me tell you a bit about what I have planned for Conner Kent and Smallville…

sbv2_1_dylux-4-copy

As of typing this I have six full scripts done with a seventh in the outline stage. And, I have the first fifteen issues plotted out. So, this will be a BIG story. A Big story made up of a lot of smaller stories. Most of the run will be only 1 or 2 part arcs that add up to a bigger, badder story I’m weaving in that will culminate around Issue 12 or 13. I don’t want to say too much about it yet, but the first issue has some pretty good clues and teases. It also has THE PHANTOM STRANGER! one of my favorite comic book characters. Seems like an odd fit? Well Smallville really is the ideal American small town. But all small towns have a dark side. And Smallville’s dark side will be slowly creeping to the surface, making Kon-el’s attempts at a “normal life” harder and harder to achieve. What you see in the first two issues will only be the tip of the iceberg. (If you’re interested I suggest picking up THE PHANTOM STRANGER showcase editions…they too will hold clues to coming events!)

tales-cover

Astute readers of my past work will also notice an “homage’ of sorts to Essex County in the first issues opening sequence. It pretty much mirrors the opening pages of Tales From The Farm, with the young character of Lester dreaming of flying away and leaving his troubles behind.

(PS…One more thing. Just a side note…my past work is obviously very Canadian. I’m a proud Canuck, what can I say. But it’s kind of interesting how Canadians have played a big part in Superboy’s life so far. Tom Grummet a fellow Canuck was the Superboy artist through the 90’s. maybe we’ll have to team up for an all Canadian issue?)

sbv2_1_dylux-1-copy

One thing I love to do in all my comics is use visual motifs. Re-occurring imagery that slowly reveals a metaphor or draws attention to certain aspects of the plot. I did it a lot in Essex and I do it a lot in Sweet Tooth. But It’s also fun to use these motifs as a way of drawing links, thematic or otherwise between some of my different books. It’s why I made Jepperd a hockey player in Sweet Tooth and had him being followed by crows as he trekked across the post-apocalyptic world. And it’s why I used this opening sequence to Superboy. Kon-el and Lester have a lot in common, and at the same time, they’re very different. Lester used his imagination to escape the small town he was stuck in and the hard realities f his life. He dreamed of being a superhero and flying away to great adventure. Conner is trying to use the normalcy of small town life to escape being a superhero. But he can’t. Like Lester he is who he is, and he’ll have to accept it sooner or later.

superboycvr2v2

Now all this talk about my past work and hoe Essex County led to Superboy is probably a bit misleading. Any of my readers expecting to pick up Superboy and read “Essex County with Capes” will be disappointed. EC was a indie book through and through, both aesthetically and in its pacing and execution. Superboy is not Essex County. It can never be that kind of book. It’s a superhero comic. A DC superhero comic, and it celebrates it. It’s big and fun and full of action. But if I do my job right, all of that action a will mean something. And it will be balanced with real characters…real people living in small town America trying to figure themselves, and their lives out. And finding the answers within each other.

What else can I tell you about the book? Let’s see…There is a great first issue cover by Rafael Albequerque (American Vampire) and great covers to issues 2-5 by the awesome Phil Noto. There are a few new characters like Psionic Lad and The Spawn of Smallville. And of course there’s always KRYPTO! So that’s about it for now. That’s all I got. I hope you like the first issue. If you do, stick around and come back for more. If not, that’s cool too. Thanks for trying it out.

I can’t wait for #2 and #3 and beyond to come out, to share the stories I’ve been cooking up with Pier Gallo and the rest of Superman team up at DC! Thanks for reading.

Supergirl and The Doom Patrol

A couple more recent pieces I did, the first was a gift for my new comics pal Sterling Gates, who also happens to be the current writer of DC's monthly Supergirl title. The pose itself was swiped from an awsome bronze-aged pic, but I can't figure out who the original artist was?

Anyways the other is just a fun piece I did as I read The Doom Patrol Archives Vol. 1 this week.

Updates, Bits and Pieces...

http://www.podbean.com/image-logos/20161_logo.gif

1. I will be appearing at the Windy City Comic Con this Saturday, October 25 in Chicago.
Anyone in the area should come check it out. The Convention is being run and sponsored by the Around Comics, 11 O'Clock Comics and Word Balloon crews. The guest list is great and includes my good buddy and fellow Top Shelfer Jeffrey Brown. I am also now accepting pre-orders for sketches and commissions for the show. Just email me with any questions.

2. My first Vertigo work, a 144-page OGN entitled The Nobody, is in the can! I finished up artwork on the book last week, and have sent it off to my editors Bob Schreck and Brandon Montclair at DC. It feels great to be done another book, and now I'm starting on my next two projects, one a new graphic novel for Top Shelf, tentatively scheduled for 2010, and another BIG project which is still TOP SECRET!

3. I've also been busy with a couple of short pieces. One is for a yet to be announced anthology from Dark Horse Comics. The second is a 10-page western written by Joshua Hale Fialkov and illustrated by me, which will be a part of next year's follow up to Image Comic' Outlaw Territory anthology.

4. Last night I did an hour long interview with the COMIC BOOK GEEK SPEAK podcast, which will be online tomorrow (Tuesday Oct 21). We talk about the entire Essex County Trilogy as well as my upcoming Vertigo work.

5. And, finally here is the second installment of the BIO-GRAPHICAL strip I have been doing for DRIVEN magazine, which is a bi-monthly insert in Canada's Globe and Mail newspaper. Enjoy!
