Simon & Schuster acquires new graphic novel Jeff Lemire
Simon & Schuster acquires new graphic novel from New York Times bestselling author Jeff Lemire
New York, NY, Toronto, Ontario—October 10, 2013—Jeff Lemire, the award-winning,
New York Times–bestselling author of Essex County and The Underwater Welder, will publish
Roughneck, a new graphic novel, with Simon & Schuster and Simon & Schuster Canada, it was announced today. This
literary graphic
novel follows the story of a former hockey player forced to face his
demons and reconnect with his Cree heritage when his troubled sister
comes running home to the remote northern town where he now lives.
Roughneck will be
published in 2015.
Derek
is a former hockey tough guy whose quick rise to the NHL was cut short
when a brutal on-ice incident left him banned from professional hockey
for life. Now, four years later, Derek has returned
to Black River, his hometown in Northern Ontario, not far from the
Moose Cree First Nation, where his mother grew up. Derek’s slide into
alcoholism and depression is interrupted when his long-lost sister,
Annie, returns home trailing a violent ex-boyfriend.
Together, the two escape to the woods, where they struggle to reconnect with
the traditions of their Cree ancestors in order to escape their past and
gain redemption.
Brit Hvide of Simon & Schuster acquired world English rights from Charlie Olsen of Inkwell Management.
Ms. Hvide commented, “We’re absolutely honoured to be publishing
Roughneck. It’s a story about cycles—the way patterns, memories,
and people return to us, again and again, whether we want them to or
not. Jeff is one of those unique storytellers whose books speak to
readers across all genres, and we think that Roughneck
will be his finest work yet.”
Kevin
Hanson, Publisher of Simon & Schuster Canada, commented, “We are
thrilled to add Jeff to our emerging list. His graphic novels are
inspiringly original and explore ideas that are deeply
Canadian.”
Jeff Lemire is the New York Times-bestselling creator of the acclaimed graphic novels
Sweet Tooth, Essex County, and The Underwater Welder and the sci-fi love story
Trillium. Jeff is also a prominent writer for DC Comics, where he currently writes the monthly adventures of
Green Arrow and Justice League of America. He has also written the monthly adventures of
Superboy, Animal Man, and The Atom, among many
others. In 2008 and 2013, Jeff won the Shuster Award for Best Canadian
Cartoonist. He has also received The Doug Wright Award for Best Emerging
Talent and the American Library Association’s
prestigious Alex Award, recognizing books for adults with specific teen
appeal. He has also been nominated for 7 Eisner awards, 7 Harvey
Awards, and 8 Shuster Awards. In 2010,
Essex County was named as one of the five Essential Canadian
Novels of the Decade by the CBC. He currently lives and works in Toronto
with his wife and son.

NELVANA of the NORTHER LIGHTS KICKSTARTER
Toronto, ON – Two Toronto-based comic book historians, Hope Nicholson and Rachel Richey, will be launching a Kickstarter campaign to reprint Nelvana of the Northern Lights in its entirety. The campaign commences October 1st, 2013 and concludes on October 31st, 2013.
During WWII, the Canadian government banned the import of US made luxury goods. Bereft of Superman and Batman comic books, Canadian publishers rushed to fill the void, creating hundreds of original comic book characters. Nelvana of the Northern Lights, created by Adrian Dingle, was the best-known of this era, responsible for selling millions of comic books across the country. Nelvana was an Inuit goddess in a miniskirt brought to earth to protect Canada from the Axis powers and outer-space invaders. She’s one of the world’s first superheroines, predating the better-known Wonder Woman by four months.
After WWII, none of these comic books has since been seen by the public.
The campaign is supported by the contributions of internationally-renowned local artists including:
- Ramón Pérez (Tale of Sand, Wolverine and the X-Men)
- Francis Manapul (Witchblade, The Flash)
- Jeff Lemire (Essex County, Sweet Tooth)
- Ray Fawkes (One Soul, Constantine)
- J. Bone (Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Super Friends)
- Marco Rudy (Swamp Thing, Spider-man: Marvel Knights)
- Kalman Andrasofszky (Captain Canuck, X-23)
Nelvana of the Northern Lights will be reprinted with the permission of the copyright holders, Corus Entertainment and the National Archives of Canada.

JUSTICE LEAGUE CANADA Is Coming in 2014!
At this weekend's FAN EXPO Canada THE TORONTO STAR announced that I will be taking the reigns as writer of DC Comic's Justice League of America title this Spring with the brilliant Mike McKone joining me as the books artist.
I was also on CANADA AM this morning on CTV discussing the project...
We're not revealing the full roster of the new Justice League team yet, except for one of my all time favourite DC characters ADAM STRANGE! Adam will finally appear in the New 52 DCU and he will be a Canadian! Mike McKone and I will also be creating a brand new Canadian character for the team during the Justice League Canada arc.
Aside form Adam Strange the rest of the roster will be made up of my dream team of DC characters. A few of these characters are members of the current team, but many have never been in a Justice League before (note, the cover image above was just a mock-up for the announcement and not representative of the actual team).
Obviously I'm pretty excited about the gig, and the most exciting thing of all is that we will be changing the book's title to JUSTICE LEAGUE CANADA for our first story-arc before the book permanently changes into something else...something bigger...so stay tuned!

It’s the year 3797, and botanist Nika Temsmith is researching a strange species on a remote science station near the outermost rim of colonized space. It’s the year 1921, and renowned English explorer William Pike leads an expedition into the dense jungles of Peru in search of the fabled “Lost Temple of the Incas,” an elusive sanctuary said to have strange healing properties. Two disparate souls separated by thousands of years and hundreds of millions of miles. Yet they will fall in love and, as a result, bring about the end of the universe. Even though reality is unraveling all around them, nothing can pull them apart. This isn’t just a love story; It’s the LAST love story ever told.

"The most spectacular episode of The Twilight Zone that was never produced. I really, really care about the people in this story... And I can pretty much guarantee you will too." -- From the introduction by Damon Lindelof (LOST, Star Trek, Prometheus)
"With The Underwater Welder, Jeff Lemire has created a moving, brilliant, and fiercely original work about loss, longing, and love. Full of piercing moments that will stay with you for long after you've finished reading, The Underwater Welder is a testament to the basic truth that down in the depths or up on land, there's nothing more haunting and wondrous than the human heart. A masterpiece of visual storytelling." -- Scott Snyder (Batman, Swamp Thing, American Vampire)
"Lemire’s stylized art and inventive panel structure is the perfect vehicle for his well-told story, and the tale’s poignant moments make the moments of desolation even more heart-wrenching... A beautiful, moving, wholly satisfying story about fatherhood and growing up." -- Publishers Weekly (starred review)
"[Lemire] has not lost his ability to pack an emotional wallop." -- George Gustines,The New York Times
"The Underwater Welder... is all kinds of wonderful. Buy it. You will wet yourself with tears, your brain will spin from masterful storytelling, and you will love it." -- Jeff Jensen, Entertainment Weekly
"Wise and moving... these pages are poignant and masterful, and represent some of the very best work [Lemire]'s ever done." -- Glen Weldon, NPR
"The Underwater Welder is one of the most haunting, arresting, and unforgettable books of the last year -- make that of the last ten years... an otherworldly, beautiful, and heartwarming story that transports the reader to a place unlike any other. An emotional and moving work of graphic literature that compels the medium forward and the reader further down into the deep." -- John Parker, ComicsAlliance
"The Underwater Welder is an early contender for the year's best comic book... a richly-detailed story with characters that are all deeply flawed and undoubtedly human... once you pick it up you'll wish it never ended." -- Jason Serafino, Complex
"It's a visually stunning and emotionally gripping read, so dive in." -- CBC Books
“This vividly entertaining and illuminating graphic novel by Jeff Lemire represents a synthesis of all his best past achievements, and points the way toward broad new horizons for this talented young artist.” -- Paul Di Filippo, The Barnes & Noble Review
"Haunting... Underwater Welder is just the right blend of action and abstraction, and greatly enhanced by Lemire's ability to signal movement, time and distance through clever arrangement of his panels on the page." -- Cory Doctorow, Boing Boing
"A spectacularly unpredictable reading experience... a roughly 220-page tour de force with enough emotional resonance that you might find yourself wiping away a single tear while closing the book’s final page. Thus far, this is my favorite original graphic novel of the year." -- Erik Norris, IGN
"Beautiful... Lemire’s command of pacing and his ability to come up with just the right image at just the right moment are a wonder." -- Noel Murray, The AV Club
"Like all of Lemire's work, [The Underwater Welder] packs an emotional gut punch that hits you when you're not expecting it. It's sure to stand as one of the year's best books in any medium." --Ryan Hamm, Under the Radar
"Lemire is at the top of his game here... The Underwater Welder is the story of consciously choosing your life’s direction and running with wild abandon and joy toward it." -- Jenny Christopher Randle, New York Journal of Books

As an underwater welder on an oilrig off the coast of Nova Scotia, Jack Joseph is used to the immense pressures of deep-sea work. Nothing, however, could prepare him for the pressures of impending fatherhood. As Jack dives deeper and deeper, he seems to pull further and further away from his young wife and their unborn son. Then one night, deep in the icy solitude of the ocean floor, something unexplainable happens. Jack has a mysterious and supernatural encounter that will change the course of his life forever.
Equal parts blue-collar character study and mind-bending mystery, The Underwater Welder is a graphic novel about fathers and sons, birth and death, memory and reality, and the treasures we all bury deep below the surface.

"Essex County is a tremendous achievement ... This heartfelt piece of graphic literature surpasses its form to stand as an enduring example of the finest in Canadian literature." -- from the introduction by Darwyn Cooke
"The subtle inter-weaving of Jeff Lemire's Essex County Trilogy is brilliant and constantly surprising. The cumulative impact left a lump in my throat." -- Jeff Smith, creator of Bone and RASL
"These three books on Canadian lives are individually striking, and cumulatively stunning." -- Paul Gravett, author of Graphic Novels: Stories to Change Your Life
"This is the comics medium at its best." -- Booklist (from one of three starred reviews)
Where does a young boy turn when his whole world suddenly disappears? What could change two brothers from an unstoppable team into a pair of bitterly estranged loners? How does the work of one middle-aged nurse reveal the scars of an entire community, and can anything heal the wounds caused by a century of deception?
Set in an imaginary version of Jeff Lemire’s hometown, ESSEX COUNTY is an intimate study of an eccentric farming community, and a tender meditation on family, memory, grief, secrets, and reconciliation. With the lush, expressive inking of a cartoonist at the height of his powers, Lemire draws us in and sets us free. -- a 512-page softcover graphic novel with French flaps, 6 1/2" x 9", Diamond: JUN091069
